Who is this qualification for?
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Gym Based Exercise) is for learners seeking to work in the health and fitness industry as a personal trainer, specialising in gym based exercise. This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group and is based on fitness National Occupational Standards (NOS).
There are no prerequisite qualifications required and entry can be via an interview.
Why is this qualification most suitable?
This is one of two VTCT qualifications in personal training at Level 3. Whilst this qualification is similar in size to the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Specific Populations) both qualify learners for employment as a personal trainer. This qualification specifically qualifies learners as a personal trainer in a gym-based setting. This qualification is most suitable for learners with limited prior knowledge and skills of gym instructing and personal training.
In contrast, to undertake the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Specific Populations) learners must first hold a gym instructing qualification. The specific populations qualification prepares learners to work with older adults, antenatal and postnatal clients and older adults.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively and competently as a personal trainer in gym based exercise setting, which includes: anatomy and physiology for exercise and health, principles of exercise health and fitness, know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity, health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment and nutrition for physical activity.
Learners will also develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan and instruct gym based exercise programmes and personal training programmes. All units are mandatory.
What could this qualification lead to?
Career opportunities as a personal trainer for gym based exercise exist in a variety of settings, including:
- gyms/leisure centres/sports clubs
- independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- hotels and spas
Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a personal trainer, learners may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking a specialist technical qualification, these include:
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Mat-Based Pilates
