Who is this qualification for?


The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Massage and Therapies for Sport is a technical level qualification aimed at 16-18 learners who are in a full-time Level 3 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed sports massage practitioner.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

What does this qualification cover?


This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for massage and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a sports massage practitioner. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

- Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
- Professional practice in sports massage
- Assessment in sports massage
- Sports massage treatment
- Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction
- Health and lifestyle

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, professional practice and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, assess client needs, prepare and apply sports massage treatments and provide support on health and lifestyle. Learners who complete this qualification will be able to work safely and effectively on dysfunctional tissue in a range of contexts, which include, pre-event, post event, intra-event and for maintenance purposes. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to complete three optional units. A variety of optional units are available which include: sports nutrition, applying hot and cold techniques in sport and active leisure, applying taping and strapping to support and limit specific movement in sport and active leisure, fitness testing and physiological effects of sport and exercise.

Why is this qualification the most suitable?


This qualification is most suitable for 16-19 year old learners with little or no previous experience of sport or massage who wish to become a sports massage practitioner, providing sports massage and related services in a variety of settings.

Which subjects might complement this qualification?


As a service-sector qualification, vocational subjects which may complement this qualification include, customer service, business studies and leisure and spa management and marketing. Academic subjects that may complement this qualification include maths, English, physical education, leisure studies, biology, sports studies and sport and exercise science.

What could this qualification lead to?


Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a sports massage practitioner and apply for membership with The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a sports massage practitioner, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

- commercial gyms
- public leisure centres
- specialist fitness training studios
- holistic therapy clinics and salons
- sports and athletic clubs
- competitive sporting events and matches
- independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a sports massage qualification at Level 4.
