Statement of purpose
Who is this qualification for?The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Business Studies is designed to provide learners with an understanding of the workings of business to enable them to embark on a career in specialist areas of business and management, either directly through work-based learning or through progression to Higher Education. It will appeal to those not yet working who wish to pursue a career within business and management disciplines but will also appeal to those within work seeking to both improve their understanding of the business world and to access progression opportunities.
What does this qualification cover?The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Business Studies has been designed to provide theoretical knowledge and understanding which can be related to a range of business contexts, so that a broad range of learners can access the qualification. It is anticipated that the qualification will be taught through a variety of modes of study to suit the personal circumstances of the learner, including classroom teaching, distance learning packages and online learning. In all cases, it is intended that the knowledge and understanding be contextualised to real business examples through the use of case studies or the learner's own experience.
On completion of the qualification learners will:
- Have an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of business and management practice and will apply this to a range of business contexts
- Have developed critical analytical and evaluative skills in context of business studies
- Be able to progress to first line supervisory management, further study within work-based learning or higher education, train in specialist business areas, e.g. marketing and finance
To be awarded the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Business studies the learners must achieve all four mandatory units and a minimum of four optional units.
The core will provide a broad understanding of the nature of business and the business environment and in effective management within a business through units in:
- Principles of business
- Principles of management and leadership
- Principles of contributing to innovation and change
- Managing physical resources in a business environment
The optional units provide learners with an opportunity to specialise in four disciplines:
- Human resources
To achieve the qualification the learner will be required to pass four optional units. These may be selected from a single discipline or a mixture of disciplines.
What could this qualification lead to?The primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment and or further training in a range of business disciplines, for example, in marketing, finance, human resources or management.
The successful learner will be able to progress to:
- Undergraduate studies either HND/C or Bachelor Degrees within Business Studies or other related specialisms such as finance, marketing, human resource management or leadership and management
- Work-based learning such as Apprenticeships and Higher Apprenticeships
- Continue their professional development in employment
