Who is this qualification for?

The VTCT Level 3 Extended Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up is a technical level qualification aimed at 16-18 learners who are in a full-time Level 3 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed make-up artist, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but in order to optimise their chances of success, a learner will ideally hold a Level 2 qualification or equivalent in hairdressing or beauty therapy.

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for theatrical and media make-up and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

- Health and safety in the salon
- Cosmetic make-up science
- Media make-up
- Style and fit postiche
- Photographic make-up
- Anatomy and physiology for make-up services
- Airbrush make-up

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to provide a wide range of creative make-up services in media, theatre, and fashion and photographic settings. Learners will also style and fit hair pieces and apply false eyelashes as well as understand the related cosmetic science that underpins the subject. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to complete three optional units. A variety of optional units are available which include (this list is not exhaustive): style hair using a variety of techniques, individual eyelash extensions, create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps, plan a showcase event, colour theory, visual arts concepts, design visualisation, and face and body art.

Why is this qualification the most suitable?

This qualification is one of two VTCT technical level qualifications in theatrical and media make-up. In addition to this qualification there is the Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up, both qualify learners to become make-up artists.

At 475 to 580 guided learning hours (GLH), the Extended Diploma is larger and most suited to learners who have achieved English and maths at Level 2 and wish to focus the majority of their programme on theatrical media and make-up, whereby they will develop a broader range of technical skills.

The Diploma at 410 GLH is most suitable for learners who continue, as part of their programme of study to work towards achieving Level 2 English and maths, or those undertaking another qualification in parallel.
