The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality Industry Skills - Food Service is to prepare you to enter the hospitality industry working in the food service sector.
Who is this qualification for?
The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality Industry Skills - Food Service is a vocationally related qualification aimed at learners aged 16+ who want to gain employment in the food service sector. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
This qualification does not form part of an apprenticeship and is the only bar service specific qualification offered by VTCT.
Overview
This qualification introduces the knowledge and understanding of food service and will develop technical skills needed to successfully start a career in the food service sector. You will have your food service skills and knowledge assessed in a workplace or realistic working environment.
You will be required to demonstrate your skills at serving food and drinks in a variety of settings including silver service and table service. You will learn about the importance of a safe, hygienic and secure working environment, how to work as part of a team, how to apply for a job and prepare for a successful interview.
This is a vocationally related qualification and includes all the required elements to develop your practical skills. The five mandatory units include customer service in the hospitality industry, safe, hygienic and secure working environments in hospitality, drinks service, food service and workplace skills.
Assessment can be carried out in a number of different ways including observations, role play, reports, written work or professional discussions. You can use the Record of Assessment book to track your achievement.
What could this qualification lead to?
This qualification will prepare you to enter the hospitality industry working in the food service sector. On successful completion of this qualification you could also progress directly into employment as waiting staff or trainee assistant manager in a variety of settings:
- Events e.g. conference/banqueting
- Cafes
- Cruise ships
- Restaurants
- Bistros and Brasseries
- Pubs
- Bars
- Clubs e.g. sports clubs, private members clubs
- Nightclubs
You could also choose to progress onto an apprenticeship in Food and Beverage Service.

The Institute of Hospitality recognise this qualification as being fit for purpose to prepare you for employment within the food service sector.
