Purpose
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-Up is a occupational qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a make-up artist. This qualification is based on Habia National Occupational Standards (NOS). This qualification is recognised by the UK's largest beauty therapy trade body/professional association, The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) and also the UK's second largest association representing beauty therapy employers; the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a make-up artist.
This qualification has specifically been designed for the 16-19 age group and builds on existing knowledge and understanding of make-up artistry gained at Level 2, enabling learners to expand the scope of their technical skills to prepare learners for employment as a make-up artist.
The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist including airbrush make-up for the face, camouflage make-up, fashion and photographic make-up and media make-up. These units are all mandatory.
Learners also have the opportunity to undertake a wide range of optional units to enhance their practical skills in both hair and make-up application/beauty techniques such as face and body art, mehndi skin decoration, applying prosthetic pieces, styling and fitting postiche, wig services and fantasy hair design, production arts planning and many more related units.This qualification is comprised of four mandatory units and in order to be awarded the qualification, learners must also gain a minimum of 20 credits from units in the optional group.

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a make-up artist learners may choose to complement their knowledge and skills by undertaking higher level qualifications in related areas such as:
