Who is this qualification for?
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up is a occupational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed theatrical media make-up artist working with performers to a high level of occupational ability, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.
This qualification is based on hairdressing and beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's lead beauty therapy professional association (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology - BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a professional theatrical media make-up artist.
Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 2 hair or beauty qualification and/or a successfull skills test and interview.
Why is this qualification most suitable?
This qualification is one of two VTCT qualifications in theatrical hair and media make-up. This qualification is larger than the VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-Up Studies. Whilst both qualifications qualify learners to become a professional media make-up artist, this qualification requires learners to achieve more units and to develop a greater breadth of technical skills.
Hence, this qualification is most suitable for learners who wish to focus the majority of their Study Programme on hair and media make-up. In contrast, the VTCT LEvel 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-Up Studies is more suited to learners who wish to undertake a Level 3 Technical Level qualification alongside other smaller qualifications.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, builds on existing knowledge and understanding of media hair and beauty skills and will develop an enhanced repertoire of technical skills to prepare learners for employment as a professional theatrical media make-up artist. Learners will have their skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a professional theatrical media make-up artist including: health and safety practice; client care and communication; airbrush make-up to the face; camouflage make-up; media make-up; fashion and photographic make-up; style and fit postiche and the application of prosthetic pieces and bald caps. These units are all mandatory.
Learners will further develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps; face and body art; fantasy hair design; production arts planning; eyelash and brow treatments and 2D visual communication - the full list of optional units is presented in the learner Record of Assessment book (RoA) (specification). This qualification's structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a professional theatrical media make-up artist.
