Who is this qualification for?
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Beauty Services is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in both hair and beauty, enabling you to perform your own services as well as assist others.
This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for hairdressing and beauty therapy is recognised by the UK's leading professional body the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as a foundation qualification for further learning.
Entry onto this qualification can be via previous achievement of a Level 1 qualification in hair and beauty and/or a successful skills test and interview.
Why is this qualification most suitable?
This qualification is suitable for learners from the age of 14+ and is a good foundation for further learning in hairdressing or beauty therapy.
At 362 guided learning hours (GLH) this qualification is part of a suite of L2 hair and beauty qualifications available at pre-16. This qualification is larger than the VTCT Certificate in Hair and Beauty Services and would be suitable to be taught as a standalone qualification in a school environment delivered over two years.
What does this qualification cover?
There are nine mandatory units in this qualification for you to study including; health and safety, shampoo and conditioning hair, the art of dressing hair, apply make-up, manicure and pedicure treatments, salon reception duties, the art of colouring hair and create an image based on a theme.
What could this qualification lead to?
Progression routes for further learning at post 16 from the VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hair and Beauty Services has many possibilities at Level 2 and Level 3. This could be a small award in one specialism (hair or beauty) or a full diploma covering a range of both skills.
Three suitable diplomas are:
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-Up Studies
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
Alternatively, learners may wish to seek employment in the hairdressing or beauty therapy sector as:
- An assistant or apprentice
- Junior hairdresser or therapist with limited service ability
