Who is this qualification for?


The VTCT Level 1 Award in Vocational Studies - Hair and Beauty is a qualification that has been designed to introduce you to a range of practical skills from across the hair and beauty industries while providing you with the opportunity to develop your own personal and social skills.

This qualification has been designed as a foundation for further learning in the hairdressing and beauty therapy industries.

Why is this qualification most suitable?


This particular qualification is suitable for you to study as a small standalone qualification as an introduction to hair and beauty education, or as part of a programme of study alongside another qualification.

This qualification is very flexible and will allow you to choose from over 50 units ranging from; managing your own money to dealing with problems in everyday life, through to basic manicure to plaiting hair. Each unit you choose to study will be underpinned by knowledge and understanding of the subject.

What does this qualification cover?


This qualification will give you the opportunity to perform your own basic hair and beauty services alongside assisting others in the salon.

There are two mandatory units in this qualification;
- Developing yourself
and
- Preparation for work.

You will then be able to select one optional unit from group A, which is a large range of personal development units which includes: community action, managing social relationships, parenting awareness, dealing with problems in daily life, individual rights and responsibilities, environmental awareness, making the most of leisure time, working towards goals, managing own money, working as part of a group and healthy living.

You will also be able to select one unit from group B, which is a large range of hair and beauty units which include; create an image using colour, introduction to the hair and beauty sector, presenting a professional image, salon reception duties, health and safety, working with others, create and maintain retail displays, hair plaiting, shampoo and conditioning, plaiting and twisting hair, styling men's and women's hair, colour hair using temporary colour, hand and skin care, themed face painting, basic manicure and pedicure treatments, basic make-up application and lastly nail art.

What could this qualification lead to?


This qualification will prepare you for either supervised employment in the hair and beauty industry working as an apprentice or for further study at level 2 in college.

You may choose to continue to develop your skills in both industries, or decide to specialise in just one; hairdressing, barbering, beauty therapy or nails by studying one of the following VTCT qualifications:

- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy Make-Up
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Nail Services
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering Studies
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up Studies
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies
