Purpose
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies is a occupational qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as an employed and/or self-employed hairdresser. This qualification is based on Hairdressing National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading hairdressing trade bodies/professional associations (i.e. National Hairdressing Federation, The Hairdressing Council, The Freelance Hair and Beauty Federation) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as an advanced hairdresser/stylist.
Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council.
This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group and builds on existing knowledge and understanding of hairdressing and develops an enhanced repertoire of technical skills to prepare learners for employment as a senior hairdresser/stylist.
The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a advanced hairdresser/stylist including: health and safety; client consultation; advanced cutting; styling and colouring techniques; and selling products and services to clients. These units are all mandatory.
Learners will also develop their understanding and skills base by selecting a number of optional units from a range of specialist units which includes: bridal hairstyling; marketing for the hair and beauty sector; hair extension services; and relaxing African type hair (the full list of optional units is presented in the learner Record of Assessment book (RoA) (specification) on Page 5). This qualification structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as an advanced hairdresser/stylist.

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as an advanced hairdresser, learners may choose to complement their skills base by undertaking advanced specialist qualifications at Level 4:
