Who is this qualification for?
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering Studies is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed men's hairdresser. This qualification is based on the barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading barbering association (British Barbering Association - BBA) and hairdressing professional body (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior men's hairdresser. Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing/barbering and/or a sucessful skills test and interview.
Why is this qualification most suitable?
This qualification is part of a suite of barbering qualifications. At 345-375 guided learning hours (GLH), this qualification is smaller than the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering which is also included in the Performance Tables. Whilst both qualifications qualify learners to become junior men's hairdressers, this qualification in barbering requires learners to achieve all the key elements of men's hairdressing/units to enable working as a men's hairdresser, but requires less optional units to be studied. This qualification is most suitable for learners who are committed to completing maths and/or English or another smaller qualification in parallel to the Barbering Studies qualification as part of their programme of study.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, builds on existing knowledge and understanding of barbering/hairdressing or will develop a complete repertoire of technical skills to prepare learners for employment as a junior men's hairdresser. Learners will have their barbering skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.
The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a junior men's hairdresser including: health and safety; client consultation; shampoo and conditioning hair; cut men's hair; cut facial hair and promote products and services to clients in a salon. These units are all mandatory.
Learners will also develop their understanding and skills base by selecting a number of optional units from a range of specialist units which include: style men's hair; reception duties; providing scalp massage services; promoting products and services to clients; and perming and colouring hair; (the full list of optional units is presented in the learner Record of Assessment book (RoA) (specification) on Page 5). This qualification structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a junior men's hairdresser
What could this qualification lead to?
Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Barber (SRB) with The Hairdressing Council.
