Who is this qualification for?
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women's and Men's Hairdressing is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed unisex hairdresser/stylist. This qualification is based on the hairdressing and barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional body (The Hairdressing Council) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist.
Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing/barbering and/or a successful skills test and interview.
Why is this qualification most suitable?
This qualification is unique as the only one which covers both women's and men's hairdressing, and is therefore most suitable for learners who wish to provide hairdressing services to males and females.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, and will develop knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare learners for employment as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist. Learners will have their unisex hairdressing skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist including: health and safety; client consultation; shampoo and conditioning hair; cut womens hair; the art of dressing hair; cuts men's hair and cut facial hair. These units are all mandatory.
Learners will also develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional units, which include: reception duties; promoting products and services to clients; and perming and colouring hair - the full list of optional units is presented in the learner Record of Assessment book (RoA) (specification).
What could this qualification lead to?
Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Hairdresser/Barber (SRH/B) with The Hairdressing Council.
Career opportunities as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist exist in a variety of contexts, including:
- Commercial unisex salons
- Specialist African type unisex salons
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- Product manufacturing and training
- Television, film, theatre and media
- Armed services
- HM prison service
- Cruise liners
Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist, learners may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking a Technical Level qualification in hairdressing or barbering Level 3, these include:

- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies
