The minimum guided learning hours (GLH) to achieve this qualification is 338 GLH.
The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing is to prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning. All the units within this qualification directly relate to the hairdressing industry.
The VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing is a qualification that has been designed to introduce you to the complete range of practical hairdressing skills and will act as the foundation for you to progress onto the next level of vocational learning at level 2. Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of an Entry Level qualification in hairdressing and/or a successful skills test and interview.
The units in this qualification include: introducing you to the hair and beauty industries, how to present a professional image and working with others in the salon, salon reception, develop your creative skills in the art of dressing hair, applying temporary colour, create a hair and beauty image, provide effective shampooing and conditioning hair, how to display retail stock and the creative art of styling women's hair.
You will also select two optional units from a range which includes: plaiting hair or plaiting and twisting hair, head massage, promoting products and services to clients, and styling and finishing African type hair and men's hair.
Throughout this qualification you will develop your skills of shampooing, blow-drying and styling women's hair. You will also develop your knowledge of different hair types and health and safety requirements and how to present yourself within the hairdressing industry. You will learn how to section hair effectively and how to apply temporary colour. These skills and knowledge will together prepare you for the next level of vocational study.

This qualification will prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning at level 2, specifically you will be able to undertake:
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (Combined Hair Types)
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women's and Men's Hairdressing
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Barbering
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in African Caribbean Hairdressing
This is one of two VTCT qualifications in hairdressing at level 1 that will prepare you for study at Level 2. At 338 GLH this qualification is larger than the VTCT Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing Studies at 310 GLH. Whilst both qualifications will develop your hairdressing knowledge and skills to prepare you to progress to the next level, this qualification requires you to achieve more units, which will provide you with a broader foundation for your future career path in hairdressing, barbering or unisex hairdressing.
