The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering is to confirm your competence in the job role of assistant junior hairdresser or barber. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific job role of an assistant junior hairdresser or barber.
Overview
The VTCT Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering is a vocational qualification that will confirm your competence as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber. This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years or over and will support you to gain employment as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber, as the units contained in this qualification cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role. Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of an Entry level qualification in hairdressing and/or a successful skills test or interview.
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber including: shampooing and conditioning hair, preparing for hair services, preparing the work area, and assisting in the monitoring health and safety practices in the salon.
You will also develop your understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: assisting with salon reception duties, assisting with shaving services, assisting with blow-drying hair, assisting with hair colour services, assisting with perming services, assisting with plaiting and twisting hair, assisting with removing hair extensions. The structure of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for a career as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber.
Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the anatomy of the hair, health and safety, client care and hair product knowledge. You will develop a range of technical assisting skills in hairdressing and barbering services. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients, when assisting with salon reception duties.
What could this qualification lead to?
This qualification will prepare you for employment as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber in a commercial hair salon.
Whilst the primary outcome of this qualification is to enable you to gain employment as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber in the hairdressing and barbering sector, you can also progress to the next level of learning via a range of vocational qualifications at level 2, these include:
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
- VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (Combined Hair Types)
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing
- VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Men’s Hairdressing
This is one of two VTCT certificates in hairdressing at Level 1. This is the only level 1 qualification in hairdressing that will confirm your competence for the job role of assistant junior hairdresser. This qualification requires you to work in a commercial salon whereby assessments must be carried out on real paying clients.
In contrast, the VTCT Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing Studies has a purpose of preparing you to progress to the next level of vocational learning rather than confirming competence in a specific job role. The VTCT Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing Studies allows you to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients.
Who supports this qualification?
This qualification is based on the hairdressing and barbering National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's professional register of hairdressers and barbers, the Hairdressing Council (HC) as being fit for purpose to confirm your competence as an assistant junior hairdresser or barber.
