The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Preventing Injuries in Sport and Active Leisure (QCF) is a technical level qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as an employed and/or self-employed sports massage therapist. This qualification is based on massage National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's largest and leading professional association for sport and remedial therapists , The Federation of Holistic Therapists. This qualification is also recognised by the General Council for Soft Tissue Therapies (GCMT), the governing body for massage and soft tissue therapies that form all bodyworks and soft tissue techniques in the UK. The GCMT also represents several professional associations for massage.
Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a member of The Federation of Holistic Therapists and/or join any of the professional associations governed by the General Council for Soft Tissue Therapies.
This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group and develops the necessary knowledge, understanding and technical skills to prepare learners for employment as a sports massage therapist.
The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a sports massage therapist including: functional anatomy, physiology and nutrition for sports therapies; applying sports massage methods; injuries in sport; customer service, employment rights and responsibilities; understanding the active leisure and learning sector; and field based fitness testing. These units are all mandatory.
Learners will also develop their understanding and skills base by selecting a number of optional units from a range of specialist units which include: applying taping and strapping; applying hot and cold modalities; applied sport and exercise psychology; and sports nutrition. This qualification structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to support their chosen context within the field of sports massage.

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as sports massage therapist, learners may choose to complement their skills base by undertaking advanced specialist massage qualifications at Levels 4 and 5 :
- VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy (QCF)
- VTCT Level 5 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy (QCF)
Mandatory - from this group you'll need to cover a minimum of 7 units and earn a minimum of 58 credits.
Optional - from this group you'll need to cover a minimum of 1 units and earn a minimum of 5 credits.
