Who is this qualification for?


The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification that develops the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career in sport and active leisure as an employed/self-employed fitness instructor. This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16+ age group. The qualification is based on fitness National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's lead professional association, the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).

What does this qualification cover?


This qualification covers all the components required to work effectively and competently as a fitness instructor, which include: anatomy and physiology for exercise, principles of exercise, health and fitness, knowledge of how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity and health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment.

Learners must choose a specific area (pathway) within fitness instructing that they wish to specialise, these are as follows:

Gym-based exercise pathway
Learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan and instruct exercise programmes for gym based exercise for apparently healthy adults of all ages; they will also learn how to provide effective support for clients who take part in exercise and physical activity.

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-based Exericise) (QCF) is one of two VTCT qualifications that focuses solely on Gym-based Exercise.

Learners will select this qualification if gym instruction is the discipline route they wish to take and they want to study part time at a college or with a private training provider. Learners will choose the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Gym-based Exercise) if they wish to pursue an apprenticeship route.

In contrast the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Exercise, Health and Fitness (QCF) contains the gym instructor qualification along with a larger breadth of exercise related skills and knowledge. This is more aimed at learners want to undertake full time study and who are unsure of what direction to take in this sector.

Water-based exercise pathway
Learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan and instruct water based exercise classes for apparently healthy adults of all ages; they will also learn how to provide effective support for clients who take part in exercise and physical activity.

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Water-based) (QCF) is one of two VTCT qualifications that focus solely on instructing water-based exercise sessions.

Learners will select this qualification if water based exercise instruction is the discipline route they wish to take and they wish to study part time at a college or with a private training provider. Learners will choose the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Water-based Exercise) if they wish to pursue an apprenticeship route.

Exercise to music pathway
Learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan and instruct exercise to music classes for apparently healthy adults of all ages; they will also learn how to provide effective support for clients who take part in exercise and physical activity.

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Exercise to Music) (QCF) is one of two VTCT qualifications that focuses solely on instructing Exercise to Music group session.

Learners will select this qualification if group exercise to music instruction is the discipline route they wish to take and they wish to study part time at a college or with a private training provider. Learners will choose the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Exercise to Music) if they wish to pursue an apprenticeship route.

In contrast the VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Instructing Exercise to Music to Older Adults and People with Disabilities (QCF) is for learners who wish to pursue a career working with older adults and people with disabilities promoting exercise through group exercise to music sessions.

Exercise and physical activity for children pathway
Learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to plan, instruct and review exercise and physical activities for children; they will also learn how to provide effective support for children who take part in exercise and physical activity.

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Exercise and Physical Activity for Children) (QCF) is one of two VTCT qualifications that focuses solely on exercise and physical activity for children.

Learners will select this qualification if working with children, promoting and instructing exercise and physical activity with children is the discipline route they wish to take and they wish to study part time at a college or with a private training provider. Learners will choose the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Exercise and Physical Activity for Children) if they wish to pursue an apprenticeship route.

What could this qualification lead to?


Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to join the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as a Level 2 member under the category of Fitness Instructor, specialising in their chosen area of expertise.

Career opportunities as a fitness instructor exist in a variety of contexts including:

- Sports and leisure centres
- Private clinics, health clubs and spas
- Cruise Liners
- Hospitals / Care Homes
- Self-employed/mobile settings

Learners who have achieved the gym based exercise, exercise to music and/or water based exercise pathways could undertake a Technical Level qualification at Level 3, these include:

- VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Mat-Based Pilates (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Exercise, Health and Fitness Studies (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Gym Based Exercise) (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training (Specific Populations) (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma(s) in Sports Studies (QCF)

Learners who have achieved the physical activity for children pathway could undertake a Technical Level qualification at Level 3, these include:

- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Exercise, Health and Fitness Studies (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Mat-Based Pilates (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma(s) in Sports Studies (QCF)
